WHAT CAUSES PIGMENTATION
Aside from sun exposure, pigmentation can also be triggered by other factors like age, hormonal influences, hereditary, skin injuries, inflammation or harsh skin care products. These conditions occur typically on sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, décolleté, body, hands, arms, and legs.
Pigmentation is a complex process that involves different depths of the skin. The best pigmentation treatment is dependent on your skin type, the type of hyperpigmentation and the underlying causes.
TYPES OF PIGMENTATION

MELASMA
Often found in Asian skin. It manifests as irregular patches of darker brown discolouration, usually on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and lips. Melasma or Chloasma is more common in women and in darker-skinned people, and can be aggravated by sun exposure and hormonal changes.

FRECKLES
They are small, flat brown spots that usually develop in sun-exposed areas as a result of genetic factors. In most cases, freckles are harmless and are common in children.

BIRTHMARKS
A common type of discolouration that can be categorized into vascular (red) or pigmentation (brown) birthmarks. Red coloured birthmarks are caused by a localized area of abnormal blood vessels. Brown birthmarks arise from localized areas of excessive pigmentation.

Brown spots
Pigmentation is brown spots or patches on the skin caused by an excess melanin production in the skin. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes at the lower layer of the epidermis and can be triggered by sun exposure.

SOLAR LENTIGINES
Sun spots, also known as solar lentigo, are dark brown spots present on the skin. Increasing age and repeated sun exposure lead to the appearance of more sun spots. They are caused by sun exposure, and appear most commonly on the face, hands, and arms.

POST INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION
PIH is skin discolouration of the skin that remains after a wound heals such as acne, eczema, cuts, shaving, and burns. It is the skin’s natural response to inflammation. The cell produces more pigmentation during the healing process.

HORI’S NAEVUS
An acquired benign dermal melanocytosis as a small macular hyperpigmentation on the face. Especially the malar areas and both sides of the forehead. The colour of the lesion is mostly blotchy grey to blue.

AGED SPOTS
Sometimes called liver spots, these spots are small, flat brown, gray, or dark spots that can appear alone or in clusters. They are frequently visible in areas that get a lot of sunlight, such as your face, hands, shoulders, and arms.

Laser Treatment for pigmentation
To achieve the desired effect, the old technique was to increase the intensity of laser treatment. While more intense treatment may give better results, the skin is a delicate tissue and cannot tolerate power above a certain level. There is no way to determine with any degree of certainty when a patient reaches the threshold limit for intense treatment because this limit varies so widely. In some cases, the skin may become injured.
This single-dimensional method can create more pain, post-treatment discomfort and longer downtime for the patient. There is an increased risk of unpredictable and damaging results which can make the overall experience unpleasant for patients.
So what is the best laser treatment for the different types of hyperpigmentation like melasma, freckles, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun spots?
Our pigmentation treatment approach is to combine several synergistic procedures that are individually effective and safe. These procedures provide much better results when used in combination. With over 10 laser machines in our clinic and a wide repertoire of energy-based devices, we can customise the suitable multi-modal treatment approach according to your skin type and hyperpigmentation concerns and achieve optimal results for you. Besides treating your concerned skin, this approach improves your skin's texture and quality as a whole.
RF Microneedling for pigmentation removal
Apart from lasers, there are also other energy-based devices like radiofrequency microneedling that can also help to treat stubborn pigmentation.

HOW DO WE TREAT PIGMENTATION AT ENSOUL?

Our medical aesthetic doctors have devoted years of aesthetic experience to finding effective solutions for pigmentation removal. Using a range of lasers, including picosecond (Pico laser) and nanosecond Nd Yag laser, Alexandrite pico laser, long pulsed Nd Yag, Erbium Yag and yellow laser, our doctor has developed a range of laser combinations for treating dark spots. As different laser treatment modalities use different wavelengths of high-energy light, they can target different depths of the skin and treat different skin problems. Using a combination of lasers, we can augment the stimulation of collagen and elastin production and the regeneration of new skin cells, yielding better results. This method is more demanding and therefore requires an experienced doctor.
Our objective is to help patients achieve an overall healthier skin.
Together with lightening of pigmentation, fairer skin, smaller pores and smoother skin. Our patients also find they get intense toning, lifting, skin tightening, and pronounced skin renewal, resulting in a natural glow and lightening effect. The series of ablative and non-ablative lasers treat both the epidermis and dermis of the facial skin. Laser skin resurfacing targets the epidermis layer of the skin, rejuvenating it and creating new, healthier cells, resulting in a more even skin tone and texture. Through non-ablative lasers, collagen and elastin production is stimulated to improve skin elasticity and repair damaged skin.
One of the many benefits is that there is minimal/no to low downtime. Patients are able to walk out of the clinic looking radiant and more youthful after one session. Some patients may require a multi-modal treatment like topical creams and radio frequency microneedling to treat their stubborn pigmentation.

Pigmentation can sometimes recur even after successful treatments. The recurrence is due to the constant exposure to the sun as well as our hormones. We can prevent pigmentation from recurring by applying sunscreen with at least SPF 50 diligently and adopting sun protection measures to have long-term sustainable results. Treatments can only clear your pigmentations, ultimately, a proper skincare routine is equally essential in preventing pigmentation recurrence.
Every individual is different, even for their treatments. Usually you would be able to see some results after one session, but you may need a few sessions to completely clear the pigmentation as it is also dependent on the severity of the pigmentation.
