Skin Pigmentation Laser Treatment in Singapore
Struggling to find an effective pigmentation treatment in Singapore? The truth is there is no single “best” pigmentation treatment. With so many options available, choosing the right pigmentation removal treatment approach can be confusing. Effective pigmentation treatment starts with understanding what hyperpigmentation is and why it occurs — because different types of pigment sit at different depths in the skin and respond differently to treatment, Hence, our treatment approach has to also adapt to the different strategies, not just a simple "zap" and to remove everything at once.
- Melanin : a pigment produced by melanocytes (pigmentation factory), specialised cells in the skin that determine overall skin colour.
- Hyperpigmentation : occurs when the skin produces excess melanin, leading to skin patches that appear darker than the surrounding skin. Sun exposure and heat naturally stimulate melanocytes—the cells responsible for melanin production—to protect the skin from UV damage, leading to darker patches or uneven skin tone.
Pigmentation is broadly classified into two main types:
How hyperpigmentation is formed
1. STATIC PIGMENTATION | 2. progressive pigmentation |
|---|---|
Pigment deposits that remain relatively stable. These are often caused by past sun exposure, inflammation, or skin injury, and tend not to worsen once the trigger has resolved. | Pigment that continues to darken, spread, or recur. This is commonly associated with ongoing UV exposure, hormonal influences, chronic inflammation, or conditions such as melasma. |
As skin ages, the number of melanocytes decreases, but the remaining cells become larger and more defined, and melanosome regulation becomes less controlled. These changes explain why age spots are more noticeable after 40.
COMMON TYPES OF PIGMENTATION IN SINGAPORE
At first glance, many pigmentation conditions look very similar. Melasma, freckles, sun spots, acne marks, and Hori’s naevus can all appear as dark patches on the skin. The differences between them are often subtle, and it can be challenging to distinguish one from another without proper medical assessment. This is why it is common to feel unsure about which treatment is most suitable.
It is also possible to have more than one type of pigmentation at the same time, such as melasma together with deeper pigment or post-acne marks. When this happens, treatment needs to be carefully planned. If the underlying causes are not properly identified, treatment may only address part of the problem. Some areas may improve, while others remain. Over time, repeated sun exposure, skin irritation, or unsuitable treatments can make pigmentation more persistent.
Early assessment by an experienced doctor helps ensure accurate diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan. This improves the chances of achieving safer, more effective, and longer-lasting results.

MELASMA
Often found in Asian skin. It manifests as irregular patches of darker brown discolouration, usually on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and lips. It is more common in women and in darker-skinned people, and can be aggravated by sun exposure and hormonal changes.

FRECKLES
They are small, flat brown spots that usually develop in sun-exposed areas as a result of genetic factors. In most cases, freckles are harmless and are common in children.

BIRTHMARKS
A common type of discolouration that can be categorized into vascular (red) or pigmentation (brown) birthmarks. Red coloured birthmarks are caused by a localized area of abnormal blood vessels. Brown birthmarks arise from localized areas of excessive pigmentation.

BROWN SPOTS
Pigmentation is brown spots or patches on the skin caused by an excess melanin production in the skin. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes at the lower layer of the epidermis and can be triggered by sun exposure.

SOLAR LENTIGINES
Age spots, also known as sun spots and solar lentigo, are dark brown spots present on the skin. Increasing age and repeated sun exposure lead to the appearance of more sun spots. They are caused by sun exposure, and appear most commonly on the face, hands, and arms.

POST INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION
PIH is skin discolouration of the skin that remains after a wound heals such as acne, cuts, burns. It is the skin’s natural response to inflammation. The cell produces more pigmentation during the healing process.

HORI’S NAEVUS
An acquired benign dermal melanocytosis as a small macular hyperpigmentation on the face. Especially the malar areas and both sides of the forehead. The colour of the lesion is mostly blotchy grey to blue.

SEBORRHEIC KERATOSIS
Often confused with solar lentigo, these spots are small, flat brown, gray, or dark spots that can appear alone or in clusters. They are frequently visible in areas that get a lot of sunlight, such as your face, hands, shoulders, and arms.

PIGMENTATION LASER TREATMENT APPROACH AT ENSOUL

How do Laser Break Down Pigmentation?
- Laser treatment works by targeting melanin, the pigment that gives dark spots their colour.
- Each laser emits light at specific wavelengths that are selectively absorbed by melanin in the skin. When this energy reaches the pigment, it is converted into controlled heat and mechanical energy. This process breaks large, concentrated pigment clusters into much smaller fragments, without significantly damaging the surrounding healthy skin.
- This is known as selective photothermolysis and photoacoustic fragmentation — a targeted method that allows doctors to treat pigmentation safely and precisely.
- Once the pigment is broken down into microscopic particles, the body’s natural healing system gradually removes them through immune cells and lymphatic drainage. Over the following weeks, these fragmented pigments are cleared away, leading to gradual lightening of the treated areas.
Is Laser the Only Way to Treat Pigmentation?
Many patients begin by using creams and pigmentation lightening cream. While these may help with mild or surface-level pigment, they often have limited effect on deeper or more stubborn pigmentation. When topical treatments are not sufficient, laser therapy is usually considered as the next step.
Modern laser technologies, including picosecond (Pico) lasers, play an important role in pigmentation treatment by breaking down pigment particles effectively. Pico lasers are particularly useful for certain types of superficial and fragmented pigment. However, pigmentation is influenced by multiple factors, including sun exposure, hormones, inflammation, and skin sensitivity. Different pigment types also sit at different depths within the skin. Because of this, no single device is suitable for every condition.
Today, laser treatment works best when used as part of a personalised, doctor-led plan. This may include medical-grade skincare, strict sun protection, and other supportive treatments to stabilise the skin and enhance results. A comprehensive approach helps achieve safer, more stable, and longer-lasting improvement.
Our Combination Laser Treatment Approach
At Ensoul, our doctors have devoted years of medical aesthetic experience to refining safer and more effective pigmentation treatment strategies. Drawing on decades of combined expertise, we have developed a personalised combination laser approach that may include picosecond lasers, Nd:YAG lasers, Alexandrite lasers, long-pulsed Nd:YAG, Erbium:YAG, and yellow lasers, depending on individual skin needs. Each laser uses a specific wavelength of light to target pigment at different depths of the skin. By combining complementary technologies, we are able to address superficial pigment, deeper deposits, inflammation-related changes, and skin quality in a more controlled and balanced manner.
- This layered approach also enhances collagen and elastin stimulation while promoting healthy skin cell renewal. As a result, treatment not only improves pigmentation, but also supports smoother texture, refined pores, better firmness, and overall skin resilience.
- Because multi-laser treatment requires precise calibration and sequencing, it demands a high level of medical expertise. Every treatment plan is individually designed based on the patient’s skin type, pigmentation pattern, medical history, and treatment response.
- Our objective is not only to lighten pigmentation, but to restore long-term skin health. Many patients also notice improvements in skin tone, pore appearance, firmness, and radiance. With gradual treatment and proper maintenance, this integrated approach supports natural-looking rejuvenation and a healthy, long-lasting glow.

One of the key benefits of this balanced strategy is minimal downtime. Most patients are able to resume their daily activities immediately after treatment, often leaving the clinic looking refreshed and radiant. In cases of more stubborn or complex pigmentation, combination therapy with medical-grade topical treatments or radiofrequency microneedling may be recommended to further optimise results.
How Many sessions to remove pigmentation?
There is no fixed number of sessions required to treat pigmentation, as results vary from person to person. The number of treatments needed depends on factors such as the type of pigmentation, its depth within the skin, underlying triggers, skin type, lifestyle habits, and response to treatment.
Superficial pigmentation may respond more quickly, while deeper or long-standing pigmentation, such as melasma, is usually more challenging and requires a longer-term, customised approach.
In addition, pigmentation conditions—especially melasma—tend to be recurrent. Treatment therefore focuses not only on lightening existing pigment, but also on controlling triggers and maintaining results over time.
A proper medical assessment is essential to determine the most suitable treatment plan and realistic expectations for each individual.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
Pigmentations can sometimes recur even after successful treatments. The recurrence is due to the constant exposure to the sun as well as our hormones. We can prevent pigmentation from recurring by applying sunscreen with at least SPF 50 diligently and adopting sun protection measures to have long-term sustainable results. Treatments can only clear your pigmentations, ultimately, a proper skincare routine is equally essential in preventing pigmentation recurrence.
Every individual is different, even for their treatments. Usually you would be able to see some results after one session, but you may need a few sessions to completely clear the pigmentation as it is also dependent on the severity of the pigmentation.
It is a gentle treatment and almost no downtime from this treatment. The possibilities of redness could be seen and the redness should subside in few hours.
