Understanding Acne & The Types of Treatment You Can Consider

Why Is Early Treatment of Acne Important?

Many parents, teenagers and young adults believe in letting acne like cystic run its course and recover on its own without going through a clinic to ask for professional advice. Others treat it with home remedies which may only cause the pimple to further worsen. Understanding the causes of acne and which treatments can help your skin is the best way to achieve effective results.

Acne occurs when the openings of hair follicles are clogged and blocked by oil, bacteria and dead skin cells. The clogged pores become infected and inflamed, forming a pimple - a small red bump with pus at its tip. A person may suffer from multiple types of acne at the same time.

Lack of proper treatment like on the face, body or bacne can lead to depressed acne scars and pigmented acne marks - also known as Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). Acne scars can be expensive to treat, and also involve significant downtime. Active acne, and post acne scars can often lead to significant physical and psychological problems as well. Thus, it is important to treat your pimple early.

Different Types of Acne

Whiteheads are tiny spots or bumps that are visible as white or flesh-coloured blemishes. They don't generally lead to scarring.

Blackheads are small in size, dark-coloured, and may appear as slightly elevated bumps. Blackheads are formed when skin is cracked open and exposes the whitehead to air, causing them to darken due to oxidation.

They manifest in the form of small red bumps that are present beneath the skin’s surface. These blemishes do not have a visible center comprising of pus-like whiteheads do.

Pustules are bumps that are larger in size and tender to the touch. The centre usually has pus that is whitish or yellowish in colour that is caused by an infected pore cavity. Acne pustules acne is generally hard and painful to the touch. The skin adjoining the bump is likely to have a red and inflamed look.

Nodules acne is a chronic version of acne, with large, inflamed, hard, and painful lumps firmly ensconced within the skin. These acne lesions form when clogged pores damage the deeper tissues and cells underlying the skin. The lesions can result in dark spots, scarring, and similar complications of the skin.

Acne scars form when lesions such as papules, pustules or cysts, get inflamed and infected. When these inflamed lesions ‘pop’ or burst, the follicle walls get damaged or ripped apart. The larger and deeper breaks in the follicle wall cause substantial skin damage and depressed scars are formed.

Treatment for Acne

Acne is a complex skin condition with causes that go beyond cosmetic issues. While factors such as hormonal activity, genetic makeup, and stress play a part in the development of pimple, the solutions go beyond skin-deep. Moreover, not everyone’s acne condition can be treated the same way. Effectively treating acne calls for identifying the root causes and addressing them. Thus, a customized multi-modal approach by going to an acne clinic and using the right products for your skin based on medical principles can help deliver effective treatment for pimple.

Acne Scars Treatment
Xtensive Microneedling Scar Repair

Many pimple patients suffer from a variety of scarring that ranges from icepick, and boxcar, to rolling scars. Dual radiofrequency (RF) micro-needling procedure is designed to deliver RF energy deeper, and more precisely to the target areas - through gold microneedles. Q: What acne treatments are the best for me?

The treatment can be a combination of topical cream, oral medications paired with energy devices or standalone. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Q: Will my acne go away?

A: Oftentimes, acne will go away on its own after puberty has ended. However, there are some people who will continue to struggle with acne in adulthood. But the good news is that all acne can be successfully treated, it is about finding the suitable treatment as well as having a proper skin care regime.

It is also important to take care of your acne conditions early to prevent future scarring in the future which can be difficult and more expensive to treat.

Q: How can I keep acne away?

A: There are multiple ways you can keep your skin healthy.

1) Use a gentle facial cleanser, avoid over exfoliating your skin.

2) For women - select makeup that does not clog the pores or change your makeup if it is causing you to have blemishes.

3) Exercising can help to promote skin cell health as it increases the blood flow. The increase in blood flow can provide both oxygen and nutrients to the cells and carries away waste products. By exercising, it can also alleviate stress which in turn keeps those stress levels down and helps your skin look radiant.

Q: When should I see a doctor for acne treatment?

A: If over-the-counter treatments such as topical retinoid or creams containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are ineffective and your acne condition becomes more severe. It is good to approach your doctor for an alternative solution early. Severe acne, if left untreated, may lead to acne scarring, which may require a longer time to treat.
