Frown Lines Treatment in Singapore
Frown lines, also known as glabellar lines or “11 lines,” are vertical lines that develop between the eyebrows. They often become more noticeable when you frown, concentrate or draw your eyebrows together.
Frown lines develop largely because of repeated movement of the muscles between and around the eyebrows. Over time, repeated muscle contraction combined with changes in collagen, elastin and skin elasticity can cause these temporary expression lines to become deeper and remain visible even when the face is relaxed.
What Causes Frown Lines?
Several muscles contribute to movement around the eyebrows. Two important muscles involved in frown lines are the corrugator supercilii and procerus muscles.
When these muscles contract, they pull the eyebrows inward and downward, causing the skin between the eyebrows to fold. Repeated movement in this area can gradually make the creases more noticeable.
Other factors may also contribute to the development of frown lines, including:
- Repeated frowning and facial expressions
- Natural facial muscle strength and activity
- Age-related loss of collagen and elastin
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Sun exposure and photoageing
- Genetics and individual facial anatomy
- Lifestyle factors such as smoking
The appearance of frown lines therefore depends on both muscle activity and changes within the skin.
Dynamic Frown Lines Vs Static Frown Lines

Dynamic Frown Lines
In the earlier stages, the vertical lines between your eyebrows may appear only when you frown, concentrate or pull your eyebrows together.
These are dynamic frown lines.
Relax your eyebrows and the lines may largely disappear because the skin has not yet developed a persistent crease.

Static Frown Lines
Years of repeatedly folding the same area can gradually leave a more established crease in the skin. Once you can see the vertical lines without frowning, they have developed a static component.
At this stage, the problem no longer comes from muscle contraction alone. Changes in collagen, skin elasticity, texture and the depth of the crease can all influence how prominent the lines appear.
How Can Neurotoxin Injections Soften Frown Lines?
For frown lines driven mainly by muscle movement, neurotoxin injections temporarily reduce the activity of selected glabellar muscles.
When these muscles contract less strongly, they pull the eyebrows together with less force. This reduces repeated creasing between the brows and can soften the appearance of dynamic frown lines.
The goal is not simply to stop all facial movement. The doctor needs to balance the muscles around the eyebrows so that the result remains natural and appropriate for the individual's facial anatomy.
Muscle strength varies considerably between individuals. For this reason, the doctor should assess how the eyebrows move, where the creases form and how strongly the muscles contract before deciding on the injection points and dosage.
Results remain temporary. As nerve signalling and muscle activity gradually return, the treatment effect wears off over the following months.
Treating Deeper Static Frown Lines
A deep line that remains between the eyebrows while your face is relaxed has developed a static component.
Reducing the movement that repeatedly creates the crease may still form part of treatment, but it may not completely smooth an established line.
The doctor may also assess:
The depth of the crease
Skin thickness and texture
Collagen and elasticity
Sun-related skin changes
How much of the line comes from muscle movement versus the skin itself
Depending on these findings, selected resurfacing, laser, energy-based or other collagen-remodelling treatments may complement treatment of the underlying muscle activity.
Dermal fillers may sometimes be considered for selected established creases, but they are not routinely necessary for every static frown line. The area between the eyebrows contains important blood vessels, so any injectable treatment in this region requires careful anatomical assessment.
What Other Areas Can Neurotoxin Injections Treat?
Doctors can also use neurotoxin injections for selected wrinkles associated with facial muscle activity, including:
Frown lines between the eyebrows
Horizontal expression lines across the forehead
Nose wrinkles or bunny lines
Crow's feet around the outer corners of the eyes
Selected brow areas
Chin dimpling and wrinkles
Each area involves different muscles. The doctor should therefore adjust the injection points and dosage according to the individual's facial anatomy, muscle strength and natural expression.
Safety of Neurotoxin
Treating frown lines early with neurotoxin injection prevents permanent creases from forming. Because the muscles that you treat can no longer create strong creases in your skin. By starting treatment early, and repeatedly treating your dynamic wrinkles, you will prevent these from maturing into permanent static wrinkles. You may eventually require injections less often.
Treatment with neurotoxin injection is safe and the procedure itself does not take very long. Moreover, an instant recovery means that you can continue with your daily activities with no downtime. Lasting up to 4 to 6 months.
Which Treatment Is Suitable for My Frown Lines?
The most important question is not simply how deep the frown line looks, but what is creating it. If strong muscle movement creates most of the line, treatment may focus primarily on controlling that movement. If the crease remains deeply visible at rest, the doctor may also need to address changes within the skin.
Assessing the frown line both during expression and at rest helps distinguish the muscle component from the established skin crease and guides the treatment approach.
