What is PicoSure laser?

PicoSure laser is a new generation laser that deliver ultrashort laser pulses in picoseconds (10−12) whereas compared to the traditional Q-switched laser, which delivers laser pulses in nanoseconds(10−9).It is a 755nm wavelength Alexandrite laser that leverages on picosecond laser technology to manage the treatment of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and colour tattoo with remarkable results.

What makes PicoSure Laser so unique?

Unlike most other picosecond devices, PicoSure utilizes a 755 nm wavelength that naturally targets melanin. It absorbed less in blood as compared to the 1064 nm wavelength. In trillionths of a second, the 755 nm energy relies less on the photothermal action of longer-pulsed devices, instead creating an intense photomechanical impact. This technology not only spares the skin from high thermal damage, it also has greater disruption on the target chromophore with better clearance using less energy and fewer treatments. In layman’s terms, it is an ideal treatment for treating pigmentary conditions, as more laser shots can be delivered into the dermis.

The other unique feature of PicoSure Laser is that it has additional function that uses patented Focus Lens Array. Using a unique method of action, the Focus Lens uses a diffractive lens to precisely redistributes and delivers 755 nm energy to the skin. Both the high and low intensity energy lightens and helps to shatter stubborn pigments under the skin, while the high energy creates Laser-Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB) in the epidermis without damaging the skin surface.

LIOBs form and absorb incoming energy, expanding so quickly that they create pressure waves, which transmit into the dermis. This pressure squeezes the surrounding cells and simulates a pressure injury, activating cell signaling and inducing an enhanced inflammatory healing response. This process leads to increased collagen and elastin production in the dermis without the damage caused by energy passing through the dermoepidermal junction.

In addition, the 755nm wavelength device is able to breakdown tattoo inks that are difficult to remove, such as black, blue and green. Patients treated with Focus experience only a few hours of mild redness, with pigment, wrinkle and acne scar results.


A More Effective Solution For Pigmentation
Traditional lasers use photothermal energy to shatter pigments, while Picosure laser disrupts the stubborn pigments by using short pulses to treat a wide range of skin pigmentation issues such as freckles, sun spots, and melasma. It uses ultra-short pulse bursts of energy to break down pigments into smaller dust-like particles which can be absorbed by the lymphatic system and be eliminated naturally.

The 755nm Alexandrite wavelength is a good balance between the 532nm and 1064nm. It selectively targets the melanin and blood vessels without hurting the skin from high thermal damage. But I found that by combining a variety of lasers along with this PicoSure, I am able to target the different layers of the skin and achieve a comprehensive results.

Laser toning treatments can effectively correct sun spots, acne scars, melasma and other conditions that affect the skin’s pigmentation, whether they’re at the surface or deep in the dermal layers.

You probably already know about the many applications of laser and other light-based technologies in the marke that uses it for hair and tattoo removal to body contouring, and are beating out other non-invasive skin treatments by way of efficacy and popularity.

What is Laser Toning and How Does It Work?

To put it simply, laser toning is the process of using laser energy to penetrate specific layers of the skin and break apart pigments, which often surface as a result of sun damage, aging, acne, and other skin conditions.

Unlike traditional laser skin resurfacing treatments, laser toning is performed using non-ablative lasers, which work by heating up the targeted tissue without actually destroying it. This creates what dermatologists call a ‘controlled thermal injury,’ triggering a natural response in the body to produce more collagen and elastin. After the procedure is complete, the body’s immune system processes excess pigmentation and leftover particles to clear away discoloration.

The Procedure

The ND YAG Laser operates in 2 wavelengths – 1064 nm and 532 nm respectively. Designed to treat pigment cells, the ND YAG is a non-ablative laser, wherein the skin tissue continuity is retained during the course of the treatment. The pigments, basically melanin, preferentially absorb the specific wavelengths of the lasers. The emanating energy then clears the pigment.

Using the ND YAG LASER is a fairly simple procedure. Requiring about 15 minutes, it is also fast and does not call for any downtime. A good lunch time medi-facial procedure for the working class. The laser energy penetrates the dermis and rejuvenates it.

There are minimal side-effects and these are limited to redness of the treated portion. But this condition lasts for barely a few hours. Usually, there is no swelling and therefore the patient can get back to work immediately after the treatment.

The results of this treatment, for pigmentation, may not be evident immediately after the treatment. In fact before results begin to show themselves, there is a possibility of the treated skin getting dark for a week or two. But when it comes to skin lightening procedures and skin rejuvenation, the results are almost instant.

How does laser toning work?

Long Pulse ND: YAG Laser is a non-ablative laser procedure that relies on extremely short energy pulses to “”heat”” the skin. It is frequently used to stimulate collagen production which helps in collagen remodelling that helps tighten the pores, and also improve skin rejuvenation, hair removal and cut down the visibility of deep vascular lesions. The treatment is safe and effective for people with any kind of skin. The inner dermal layer is showered with photo-thermal energy, which in turn stimulates the collagen surrounding each pore. In this way, the pore size is reduced and oil secretion is also controlled. Wrinkles on the face can also be treated effectively with this treatment.

The low-energy laser passes selectively weakens melanocytes and partially destroys some melanin pigments. Doctor’s Advice & Recommendation

Laser toning is suitable for anyone who desires skin rejuvenation. Due to the very low laser energy used, clients can even do laser toning every day.

As the wavelength used is long (1064nm), it is safe for all 6 skin types. However, we advise to defer laser toning for clients who have been sunburned or has ongoing skin allergy or severe acne. Laser toning is not suitable for clients with photosensitive epilepsy and pregnant or breastfeeding.

No anesthesia is required prior to laser toning as it is very gentle on the skin. After photo taking, we proceed with the laser which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. During the procedure, the face, lips and neck will receive several passes of laser.

Immediately after procedure, a skin calming gel and sunblock is applied. Some clients may have mild facial redness that usually subsides in a few hours. For any laser procedure, be it aggressive or gentle, good sun protection regime is always advised.

Clients should actively avoid the sun and apply sunblock regularly. Avoid whitening / brightening products or peels until the skin has full healed which takes about 3-5 days.
