Non-invasive procedures for fat reduction are gaining popularity in Singapore with each passing day. This is of no surprise to anyone, due to the fact that there is no need for patients to go under the knife. Not only are they highly effective in the removal of stubborn fat but they can also help you to achieve a slimmer and more sculpted silhouette.
Fat freezing or cryolipolysis is one such non-invasive fat removal procedure. As its name suggests, a fat freezing treatment targets your fat cells with sub-zero temperatures.
Introduction to Fat Freezing
Fat cells have a higher sensitivity to temperatures; hence the treatment causes the fat cells to go through a biological process known as apoptosis or cell death.
Fat freezing is a non-invasive procedure that does not require any anesthesia or incisions. Other invasive procedures like liposuction require an incision and puncturing of the skin, whereas fat freezing achieves the loss of fat tissue without damaging the skin. As such, fat freezing is safe because it does not cause harm to nearby structures during treatment1.
Fat freezing mainly targets the fat tissue located just below your skin known as subcutaneous adipose tissue2.
While the primary purpose of fat freezing is to remove fat, it has been used specifically to shape and sculpt the body to achieve a certain silhouette or enhance the contours of the body. Therefore, the alternative name for non-invasive fat removal treatments is also known as body sculpting or body contouring3,4.
Understanding the Different Body Types
In order to achieve the most desired results from a body contouring treatment, we must first understand the different body types. As mentioned, body contouring essentially goes further than simply fat loss. A experienced provider needs to be able to look at the body as a whole and balance out the proportions to enhance the silhouette.
There are various factors that determine the overall shape and appearance of our bodies. Some of the factors that influence the shape of our bodies are:
- Hormonal factors
- Sex or gender
- Dietary habits
- Underlying diseases
- Individual’s own metabolism5
Our physical appearance can therefore be a mirror of our bodily functions. Broadly, body types have been scientifically classified as one of three varieties.
These include: The Ectomorphs, the Mesomorphs and the Endomorphs6.
Classification of Body Types
The ectomorphs are generally people who have the following traits:
This is usually because the ectomorphs have a faster metabolic function. This makes gaining muscle or weight difficult for them7.
Research has also pointed out that ‘for an ectomorph, it is as hard to gain weight as it is for an obese individual to lose unwanted fat’8.
The endomorphs on the other hand have the following characteristics:
The mesomorphs, on the other hand, fall in between the ectomorphs and endomorphs. They are muscular and athletic.
Their metabolism also lies midway between the two body types. Therefore, the mesomorphs are capable of either losing weight or gaining weight quite easily.
Different Body Shapes and Figures
Now that we’ve covered the different body types, let’s discuss the most common figures observed in most women.
While we are all unique in our own special way, here are six of the most common body figures and shapes9:
A female with this shape has a round, heavy bottom with a defined waist but the hip size is always wider than the bust and shoulders.
Short legs with full thighs are common characteristics.
A woman with this shape has broader shoulders, narrow hips, slim legs, flat bottom.
The fat is mainly distributed in the abdomen, chest, and face.
A female with this figure has a more shapeless physique with small/medium bust, slender arms and legs.
This is a curvy female with the hips and bust of the same width which emphasizes a defined waist.
This shape has an undefined waist with a large and high stomach.
This shape has an overall appearance of being round especially around the waist region, the stomach is large, the hips are wide, and the upper thighs are full.
Sculpting Different Body Types
You can imagine body sculpting as how a potter crafts and sculpts a piece of clay. Similarly, fat freezing can be used to contour and ‘balance out’ the proportions of the various body shapes mentioned above.
For example, for people with a triangle or pear-shaped body type, fat tends to pool in the bottom half of the body such as the hips or thighs. Body contouring treatments can target the fat in these specific areas to achieve a more sculpted and proportionate physique overall.
Various combinations of fat freezing at different sites can be used to achieve the desired shape of the body.
How can CoolSculpting Reshape your Body?
Here are some of the most common areas that non-invasive body contouring can treat:
1. Pinch off Your Muffin Top
If you haven’t been able to get rid of your muffin top or belly fat, a body contouring treatment might just do the trick. During the procedure, the appropriate CoolSculpting applicator will be applied onto the targeted area.
The treatment targets the fat cells with a precisely calibrated degree of cooling that freezes them without affecting the skin, muscle or other tissues.
Once the fat cells have been destroyed, the broken down fat cells in your muffin top will take up to 12 weeks to be eliminated naturally from the body.
2. Create a Curvy Waist
If you’re frustrated by your expanding waistline, or not having a waist at all, CoolSculpting can be used to reshape that area and give you the curves you desire.
As no one body is exactly the same, body contouring treatments are customized based on the various needs and goals of the patient. Our Master Body Sculptor will be able to advise and discuss with you the results that are possible, given your natural but defined contour.
3. Shed Off Your Saddlebags
Thanks to the new CoolSmooth Pro applicator that eliminates the ability to treat only areas that are “pinchable”, we can now eliminate fat cells in places that we were previously unable to reach.
4. Trim off the Bra Fat
If bra fat, back fat, flabby arms or other smaller spots of stubborn fat have been bothering you, CoolSculpting can effectively target and get rid of these pockets. With these small areas of fat, CoolMini, the CoolSculpting applicator specifically designed for smaller pockets of fat, can be used to effectively target these areas.
The CoolMini is also the most common applicator used to eliminate double chin and bra fat.
What to expect during the procedure?
During the treatment, you’ll be able to read, answer emails, chat with a friend, or even catch up on your favourite Netflix shows at Ensoul Body Medical Clinic. No anaesthesia is required, and the procedure is conducted on an outpatient basis.
It can take anywhere from 35 minutes to one hour for a single procedure to be complete. This depends on the size and area of the fat tissue that requires treatment.
After the applicator is detached, a massage will be administered onto the targeted area to break up the treated fat cells and enhance the lymphatic drainage. Afterwards, you may immediately resume your daily activities as per normal without any downtime.
The broken down fat cells will then be eliminated by the body over the course of 12 weeks.
The DualSculpting option offered at Ensoul Body Medical Clinic also allows us to treat two areas of the body simultaneously. As the treatment time for a single area is about an hour, DualSculpting can cut the treatment time in half where there are two areas to be treated. Areas such as both thighs, and both sides of the waist can be treated at the same time, rather than using one machine to treat each side sequentially.
When it comes to ensuring you get the best results, it all boils down to the expectations before the treatment as well as the maintenance post-treatment. As we have mentioned, every body is unique and no one body is exactly the same. Therefore, a detailed body assessment is required in order to determine which treatment is most suitable for your body type.
