FRUSTRATED WITH
ACNE SCARS

We hear you.

Finding the right pimples and acne scars treatment can be a challenge. The reason is simple enough. Not every treatment is suitable for you because both pimples and acne scars are unique to each person. Some people suffer from multiple types of acne and a combination of ice pick scars, boxcar scars, or rolling scars. In many cases, it’s a combination of pimples and scar types that may require a multimodal treatment approach.

But you don’t really have to worry.  The right diagnosis with an experienced doctor can easily lead you to the right acne scar and acne treatment solution for your skin.

EFFECTIVE ACNE SCARS TREATMENT

Why Early Acne Treatment is Important?

Acne can develop at any age, especially during the teenage years. However, acne can strike at will, whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, or beyond. In women, pregnancy and menstrual cycles are known to trigger acne attacks due to an increase in hormone level. Without proper treatment at the earlier stage, anyone can be a potential target of acne and acne scars.

How Acne is Formed

The problem begins when your sebaceous glands shift to overdrive mode. The hyperactive glands start producing more sebum than your skin needs. This excess sebum or body oil, combines with dead skin cells and clogs the hair follicles or pores. These clogged pores are an open invitation for bacteria to breed.  This unhygienic cocktail of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria causes irritation, skin inflammation and infection. As a result, pimples or red bumps, often filled with pus, begin to sprout on your skin. Before you realise it, you are stuck with acne.

How Acne Scars is Formed

Acne scars begin to form when inflamed lesions such as papules, pustules, or cysts develop deep within the skin.

During severe inflammation, the follicle wall can weaken and rupture. When this happens, bacteria, oil, and inflammatory material spread into the surrounding skin tissue, causing further damage.

This deep tissue injury increases the risk of permanent scarring, especially when acne is picked, squeezed, or left untreated.

Depressed acne scars form when deeper damage occurs within the skin structure. Large or severe breakages in the follicle wall destroy collagen and supporting tissue.

During healing, the skin attempts to repair itself by producing new collagen. However, if collagen production is insufficient, the damaged area cannot fully regenerate. As a result, the skin surface sinks inward, leading to pitted or sunken scars.

Post-Inflammatory Erythema (PIE) occurs when inflammation affects the small blood vessels in the skin.

After acne heals, these blood vessels may remain dilated or damaged, causing persistent red or pink marks. PIE is more common in lighter skin types and is often more noticeable when the skin barrier is weakened or thin during the healing process. These marks are not true scars and may fade with time and proper treatment.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) develops when inflammation stimulates excessive melanin production during skin healing.

After a pimple or wound resolves, excess pigment remains in the affected area, appearing as brown or dark spots. PIH is more common in Asian and darker skin tones. Picking or squeezing acne increases inflammation and significantly raises the risk of persistent pigmentation.

Radiofrequency Microneedling Treatment for Acne Scars

There are a lot of information on the internet about pimples and acne scar treatments which can make it difficult to understand what is suitable for your particular condition. This is primarily because not every acne scar treatment is suitable for all patients. Treatments vary just as acne scars differ from person to person. Therefore, a detailed consultation and assessment is important before choosing the suitable acne treatment for your skin.

The exhaustive range of acne scar treatments includes

  • Chemical peels such as TCA
  • Ablative Lasers such as Fractional Erbium Yag or Fractional CO2 laser
  • Subcision
  • Dermal fillers
  • Ablative radiofrequency
  • Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling.

Studies suggest that radiofrequency (RF) treatment for acne scars compares favourably with many conventional scar treatments. In addition to helping regulate sebaceous gland activity, RF delivers controlled thermal energy to stimulate collagen production and promote tissue regeneration, improving scar texture without significantly injuring surrounding skin.

Research has also shown that the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) following ablative COâ‚‚ laser treatment for acne scars may be as high as 40%, particularly in darker or pigment-prone skin types. In comparison, RF-based treatments are associated with a lower reported risk of PIH, typically ranging from 5% to 8%. For this reason, radiofrequency is often considered a safer and effective alternative for managing acne inflammation and scarring, especially in patients who are prone to pigmentation issues.

How does Radiofrequency Microneedling Work on Acne Scars?

The RF microneedling device is equipped with numerous small and fine needles that are customized to deliver heat energy of 40 to 60°C directly to the papillary dermis.

During the procedure, the microneedles help to break down skin fibrosis in a controlled manner. This stimulates the skin to produce collagen and rebuild the damaged connective tissue, improving scarring.

Enhanced skin hydration and reduced levels of PIH are additional benefits of this treatment. The key advantage is that the longitudinal approach allows for accurate targeting of damaged skin cells.

Benefits of Radiofrequency Microneedling

Ablative Radiofrequency and Radiofrequency microneedling treatments are comprehensive modalities that can treat a host of skin conditions.  From acne, acne scars, melasma, hyperpigmentation, enlarged skin pores, to uneven skin tone, and texture. It can also help to reverse the effects of ageing by erasing wrinkles and rejuvenating the skin.

✓ Asian skin types are exposed to lower risk of PIH with RF treatments
✓ Shorter downtime
✓ Improve overall skin health
✓ Repairs and strengthen basement membrane

Other Acne Scars & Acne Treatment Available

Acne scars are complex skin conditions that extend beyond cosmetic concerns. While factors such as hormonal imbalance, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle-related stress contribute to acne development, effective treatment requires addressing deeper underlying causes rather than surface symptoms alone.

Not all acne scars are the same, and treatment cannot be standardised for every individual. Successful scar management begins with proper medical assessment to identify contributing factors such as ongoing inflammation, skin healing capacity, and scar type.

A thorough diagnosis forms the foundation of effective acne care. Based on this evaluation, a customised, multi-modal treatment approach guided by medical principles can be developed to achieve safer, more consistent, and long-term improvement.
