How Acne is Formed
The problem begins when your sebaceous glands shift to overdrive mode. The hyperactive glands start producing more sebum than your skin needs. This excess sebum or body oil, combines with dead skin cells and clogs the hair follicles or pores. These clogged pores are an open invitation for bacteria to breed. This unhygienic cocktail of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria causes irritation, skin inflammation and infection. As a result, pimples or red bumps, often filled with pus, begin to sprout on your skin. Before you realise it, you are stuck with acne.
How Acne Scars is Formed
Acne scars form when lesions such as papules, pustules or cysts, get inflamed and infected. When these inflamed lesions ‘pop’ or burst, the follicle walls get damaged or ripped apart. The contents of the ruptured lesions seep into the surrounding skin tissues and damage them.
The larger and deeper breaks in the follicle wall cause substantial skin damage. Hence, depressed scars formed. As part of its efforts to heal the injured dermis, the skin develops new collagen fibers to repair the skin. Due to insufficient collagen production, the skin fails to regain its original smoothness and flawless tone.
Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE) also known as red acne marks occurs when blood flow is cut off during inflammation. The red or pink marks on the skin can be caused by inflammation, dilation of the blood vessels, or damage to the blood vessels. Erythema is more likely to occur as your skin thins as it heals.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) develops when the skin becomes inflamed as a result of a wound or pimple. In the healing process, the skin produces too much melanin, which darkens and discolours the skin. Even after the wound has completely healed, this discolouration remains. Furthermore, picking or popping a pimple can result in PIH since it increases inflammation.
